How Large Flanges Are Manufactured
The manufacturing route depends on the flange design, starting material, dimensions, weight, tolerances and applicable engineering requirements.
Material Preparation
Depending on the design and material specification, the flange may be produced from a forged ring, forged material, heavy plate or another approved starting material. Fabricated ring structures may use heavy plate forming and welding where appropriate to the engineering requirements.
Heavy Vertical Turning
Large components are positioned on a vertical turning lathe for primary machining. Operations may include outside-diameter turning, inside-diameter machining, face machining, steps, shoulders and grooves.
CNC Bolt-Hole Drilling
CNC drilling equipment produces bolt-hole patterns and other required openings. Hole diameter, quantity, pitch-circle diameter, angular position and positional tolerances are controlled according to the approved engineering drawing.
Secondary Machining
Depending on the design, additional operations may include tapping, grooving, counterboring, recesses, mounting interfaces, keyways and other customer-specified features.
Inspection and Verification
Finished components can undergo dimensional and quality inspection according to the project requirements, including diameter measurement, thickness verification, bolt-hole position checks, surface inspection, CMM measurement where applicable, UT, MT and other specified testing.
